july monthly wrap up // books, art, music, and more

hey there! wait what july is over already?! 😯😯 time shouldn’t be moving that quickly. well anyway, here’s this month’s wrap up, which will mostly consist of me rambling about life, books, music, and art.

art

both june and july have been months of a LOT of reading and a LOT of art. i guess since this is summer vacation for me, i have a lot of time for spending time on my hobbies. i’ve certainly improved a lot this summer thanks to all the time i have. i’m proud of the improvement i’ve made! check out this post to see some of my recent art pieces. i’ve also made a couple of sketches and doodles. these aren’t full fledged art pieces, but i’m still proud of them and i’ll share them with you guys.

books

i’ve already done a few book reviews in this month. here are the links to them.

books i’ve read this month.

  1. They Both Die At The End
  2. The Hate You Give
  3. Not My Problem
  4. We Are Not From Here
  5. We Are Not Free

i’ve dont reviews for the first three, but now it’s time to do my review for the last two!

We Are Not From Here: By: Jenny Torres Sanchez

This is the book summary from goodreads:

“A ripped-from-the-headlines novel of desperation, escape, and survival across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña have no false illusions about the town they’ve grown up in and the dangers that surround them. Though their families–both biological and found–create a warm community for them, threats lurk around every corner. And when those threats become all too real, the three teens know they have no choice but to run: for the border, for the hope of freedom, and for their very lives.

Crossing from Guatemala through Mexico with their eyes on the U.S. border, they follow the route of La Bestia, a system of trains that promise the hope of freedom–if they are lucky enough to survive the harrowing journey. With nothing but the bags on their backs and the desperation that courses through their very veins, Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña know that there’s no turning back, dangerous though the road ahead might be.

In this story inspired by real–and current–events, the plight at our southern border is brought to life.”

my review: this is such a great book! i love it so much! it is so realistic and easy to imagine this actually happening to someone. i would definitely reccomend reading this! here is my star rating.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

We Are Not Free: By: Traci Chee

here is a book summary from goodreads- not written by me.

We Are Not Free, is the collective account of a tight-knit group of young Nisei, second-generation Japanese American citizens, whose lives are irrevocably changed by the mass U.S. incarcerations of World War II.

Fourteen teens who have grown up together in Japantown, San Francisco.
Fourteen teens who form a community and a family, as interconnected as they are conflicted.
Fourteen teens whose lives are turned upside down when over 100,000 people of Japanese ancestry are removed from their homes and forced into desolate incarceration camps.
In a world that seems determined to hate them, these young Nisei must rally together as racism and injustice threaten to pull them apart.”

my review: this book was great! it’s funny how the title is so similar to the first book. but anyway i think this is definitely worth a read and you should check it out! here is my star rating.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Not My Problem by: Ciara Smyth book review! // spoiler free

heyy! welcome or welcome back to my blog! today i’ll be doing a book review for the book Not My Problem By: Ciara Smyth. this book is a y/a (young adult) book, and this is my first official book review on this blog!! i have done a few mini book reviews in a few of my other posts, but this is the first real book review!

before i get started, i just have one thing to say. THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. i loved it so much, definitely 5 out of 5 stars. amazing.

✨🌻 summary 🌻✨

this book is about a girl in highschool who deals with many problems in her life, but can’t seem to solve any of them. she then helps a girl named meabh with her problems, causing her to become a problem solver for many of her other classmates and friends.

summary from goodreads: (not written by me!!)

Aideen has plenty of problems she can’t fix. Her best (and only) friend is pulling away. Her mother’s drinking problem is a constant concern. She’s even running out of outlandish diseases to fake so she can skip PE.

But when Aideen stumbles on her nemesis, overachiever Meabh Kowalski, in the midst of a full-blown meltdown, she sees a problem that—unlike her own disaster of a life—seems refreshingly easy to solve. Meabh is desperate to escape her crushing pile of extracurriculars. Aideen volunteers to help. By pushing Meabh down the stairs.

Problem? Solved. Meabh’s sprained ankle is the perfect excuse to ditch her overwhelming schedule. But when another student learns about their little scheme and brings Aideen another “client” who needs her “help,” it kicks off a semester of traded favors, ill-advised hijinks, and an unexpected chance at love. Fixing other people’s problems won’t fix her own, but it might be the push she needs to start.

✨🌻my favorite character🌻✨

my favorite character in this book is definitely Kavi, he is so energetic and i love the fact that he just appears out of nowhere, when Aideen needs him the most. he seems like a great person and i would love to have a friend like him in real life! He’s so humorous and I love how the moment just brightens whenever he shows up.

i also love the fact that he is willing to do anything for his friends (i’m not going to delve into that much because it would mean i would have to give a spoiler)

it’s also great to have a brown character in a book like this, because we’re not represented often!

✨🌻the writing style🌻✨

i really liked the writing style for this book! this author is so good at capturing the feelings of the characters and it almost felt like i was there with them. the characters were described so vividly, and i got to know them really well throughout the book.

this book is set in ireland, and that was pretty different to what i’m used to reading. i normally read books that are set in the US.

✨🌻a quote from this book . . .🌻✨

“Things felt more messy than ever. Could someone treat you badly and still love you? Someone could treat you badly and you still love them, so maybe the reverse was true too. But just because you loved someone it didn’t mean you had to give them another chance. Or maybe that’s exactly what it meant.”

i feel like this is a good quote that represents the author’s writing style. this is when the main character Aideen is not sure what to do with the situation with her mom.

that’s it for this book review, i hope you read this book at some point because it’s really good! i’m sorry this post was a bit shorter than usual, but thanks for reading! i’ll see you next time bye!

rambles

just me rambling…

hey there! how are y’all doing? i’ve actually been feeling pretty good recently. it’s summer vacation for me right now and i think it’s been really relaxing and so far. ☀😎

towards the end of the school year in june, which was the end of 7th grade i was so tired and stressed with all the homework, assignments, tests, that my teachers decided to give us at the end of the year. the summer break was really helpful for me to sort of step back and reset. i took a break from studying, and found time to do other stuff like art, and reading. both of which are things i haven’t done in a long time.

i’m a pretty slow reader, so over the past two weeks, i finished two books, The Hate U Give, and They Both Die At The End. Both of these books are really good and I liked reading these a lot!

here are two mini book reviews (SPOILER FREE!)

this book was pretty good overall, i really liked the story line and the plot. it was really interesting and it kept me hooked most of the time. it’s a pretty emotional book, and i really liked the way the author expressed both main characters’ feelings. the only thing that i felt could be improved was that like the title says, they both die at the end, and i knew what was going to happen at the end, so it got boring at times. my rating for this book is 4 out of 5 stars.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

this book was so good!!! i loved it so much! i loved how the author made Starr’s family seem so realistic, it made you root for them throughout the story. this book shares a really good message and i would definitely reccomend! i don’t even have any criticism for this! my rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

alright that’s it for the mini book reviews, i don’t know why but it was really hard for me to write these without giving any spoilers, but i did it. 😅 i’m currently reading the book Not My Problem, By Clara Smyth, it’s really good so far and i’ll make sure to review it when i finish reading!

to take a look at my summer tbr list, check out this post.

i feel like i have a lot of time, but i think i’m just a pretty slow reader so i haven’t been able to finish a lot of books since the beginning of this summer. i really hope i finish my tbr list though! 🤞 this might be slightly challenging because i have a lot to read and not enough time to finish everything especially since i’m a slow reader.

speaking of not having enough time, i’m going on vacation for the whole month of august! while this means i have like 3 weeks to finish the rest of my tbr list before summer ends, it also means that i get to see all my grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and the rest of my extended family because i’m going to india! 😁

i’m so excited! i’ll be eating lots and lots of good food, visiting lots of family, and mostly just enjoying the really nice warm weather. i’ll try my best to continue posting during the month of august, it might be hard but i think i can do it!

i think that’s enough of me rambling. thanks for reading! i hope i didn’t bore you too much. well i guess i’ll see you all in my next post! bye!
